Cost & Budget
Most homeowners spend $3,000–$15,000 fully installed. Freestanding + chiller: $3,000–$7,000. Built-in plunge pool: $7,000–$16,000. Premium indoor: $9,000–$20,000+. Sauna + plunge combo: $13,000–$27,000+. The unit price is typically 30–60% lower than the all-in installed cost. See our full cost guide.
The four most common surprises: drainage ($500–$3,000 if no existing drain), switchboard upgrades ($1,500–$3,000), site preparation ($800–$5,000), and indoor waterproofing ($1,500–$4,000). Always get a site assessment before purchasing any unit.
A built-in plunge pool in a well-designed outdoor space adds genuine value in the $1.5M+ market. Freestanding portable units do not add property value — they are personal property you take when you move.
Installation
Yes — without exception. All chiller connections require a dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician. DIY electrical is illegal in Australia, voids insurance, voids product warranty, and is genuinely dangerous near water. Budget $500–$2,500 as a fixed cost.
Freestanding on existing slab: 1–2 days. With new electrical and drainage: 2–4 days. Built-in plunge pool: 2–6 weeks. Indoor installation: 3–7 days. Sauna + plunge combo: 2–6 weeks.
You need somewhere for 500–2,000 litres to go when you drain the tub. Options: existing garden drain, hose to garden, floor drain, or new drain line to sewer. Plan this before purchasing any unit. See our plumbing and drainage guide.
Yes, with the right approach. A filled unit weighs 500–1,200kg — most standard decks are not rated without reinforcement. Get a builder or structural engineer to assess before placing any filled unit on timber.
Technical & Maintenance
With UV or ozone sanitation and regular chemical balancing: every 2–3 months for a solo daily user. Without sanitation: every 2–4 weeks. Test water chemistry weekly.
Most research protocols use 10–15°C. Sweet spot for regular users: 8–12°C. Beginners: start at 15°C and reduce by 1°C per week. Spec your chiller for Australian summer conditions.
Electricity: $30–$80/month. Chemicals: $20–$40/month. Annual chiller service: $150–$300. Total: approximately $600–$1,500 per year.
Health & Safety
Strongest evidence supports: reduced DOMS after exercise, significant noradrenaline increase (mood and focus for 2–4 hours), improved sleep quality, and cardiovascular conditioning. The research base continues to grow rapidly.
For healthy adults, yes — with sensible protocols. Cold water immersion significantly increases cardiovascular load in the first 30–60 seconds. Consult your doctor if you have cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or are pregnant. Never plunge alone.
Sauna Combo Questions
For most homeowners already investing in a wellness space, strongly yes. Contrast therapy produces effects neither achieves alone. Building both together saves $3,000–$6,000 vs separate projects. See our full combo guide.
Choosing an Installer
Ask: how many cold plunge installs in the last 12 months? Do they use licensed electricians and plumbers as standard scope? Can they provide references and photos from recent local projects? Do they provide an itemised quote? Do they do a site assessment before quoting?
At least two, ideally three. We've seen the same scope quoted at $5,500 and $9,000 by different installers. Multiple quotes on the same specification reveal outliers and establish fair market pricing.
Permits & Regulations
Freestanding units: generally no. Built-in pools: depends on your council and state. Structures over 10m² or within boundary setbacks typically need a permit. Pool safety fencing is required around any water feature above 300mm depth in most states.
In most Australian states, any water feature above 300mm depth requires compliant pool fencing. QLD: Pool Safety Queensland. NSW: NSW Fair Trading. VIC: VBA. A compliant fence or lockable cover is required where pool safety legislation applies.
